Hiring Practices Initiative (HPI)

The Bureau of Exceptional Education and Student Services (BEESS) in conjunction with the Career Development & Transition Project of The Transition Center at the University of Florida fund Florida's Self-Determination Initiative. The Self-Determination Initiative is designed to provide training, technical assistance, and support to Florida's school districts wishing to implement self-determination activities. To date, thousands of Florida educators, family members, students, and agency personnel have benefited from training, technical assistance, and information dissemination conducted through the initiative.

Supported employment is a viable option for improving post-school outcomes for many of Florida's students with disabilities. Statewide training for staff directly involved in providing supported employment to persons with disabilities has been provided since the middle of 1980s through the leadership of the Florida Department of Education, Bureau of Exceptional Education and Student Services (BEESS).

Project CONNECT is a collaborative project, jointly funded by the Florida Department of Education, Bureau of Exceptional Education and Student Services (BEESS) and the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council. The mission of Project CONNECT is to identify best practices for providing comprehensive and continuous transition services from school to post-school adult life for students with disabilities by enhancing community partnerships.

The Florida Developmental Disabilities Council, Inc. in collaboration with The Transition Center implemented the School Hiring Practices Initiative in Brevard, Broward, Lee, Marion, Osceola, St.Johns and Volusia County School Districts during the 2001 - 2002 school year. The Hiring Practices Initiative will be continued and expanded during 2003 - 2004 to focus on improving the hiring practices of persons with disabilities within school districts.
